Results vary. In a 68-week medical study of 1,961 adults with obesity or excess weight and related medical issues, adults lost an average of ~35 lbs (or ~15% of their body weight). The placebo group lost around 6 lbs (or ~2.5% body weight). Both groups had an average starting weight of ~232 lbs.
Note: This study considered adults with obesity (BMI ≥ 30) or excess weight (BMI ≥ 27) with weight-related problems like high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Individuals with type 2 diabetes were excluded. Both groups were advised to take the medication with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. 7% taking the medication (92 individuals) exited the study due to side effects, in contrast to 3.1% (20 people) from the placebo group.
